Mrs.Knickerbocker's Kindergarten Class

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Dear Parents,

Kindergarten is a big step for both you and your child. We hope we can make it both a happy and successful experience. This year your child will be learning skills such as the names and sounds of the alphabet letters, listening skills, how to follow directions, how to print their first and last names, counting, writing, and recognizing numbers to 100, counting and comparing groups of objects up to 10, identifying shapes, and many more skills. We will be spending a lot of time learning to work and play together in a considerate way, and you may hear about Pumsy the Dragon, who helps children with the caring and sharing rules of the classroom.

We will be reading many books this year to help the children understand the many concepts that we teach. And, of course, we will read for fun and learn about the joy of reading.

Both kindergarten classes will do many activities together. We follow a team teaching approach, so your child will be working with both kindergarten teacher, and will be regularly interacting with all kindergarteners.

A typical day will look like this:

7:40-8:05   Hang up backpacks, coats, and give                      envelopes to teacher. Sign in, hang up apple,                      play.

Each day, your child will bring home his/her school envelope. All school work, homework, notes, lunch money, etc., should be sent to school in this envelope. It is essential that you check your child’s envelope every night, in order to maintain constant, efficient communication between school and home.

Yes, your child will have homework to further develop the skills we are learning and to learn the responsibility of doing homework and returning it to school. There will be math homework almost every night, Monday-Thursday. We do not assign homework over weekends or holidays. At times, your child may have additional homework in other subject areas. These assignments are short and concise, and should not take your child more than a few minutes to complete each night. Please check over your child’s homework each night, and help him/her correct errors. Homework should be completed in pencil, or with a crayon when indicated. All homework should be returned the day after it is assigned, unless otherwise indicated.

Sneakers should be worn every day. We are extremely active each day, and dress shoes are not appropriate for many of our activities. The floors are very slippery. Also, please do not send your child to school in flip-flops!

Rest Time
The children rest each day in the afternoon. If your child would like, he/she may bring in a lightweight blanket. It must be small enough to store in your child’s cubby with all of his/her other belongings.

We eat lunch at 10:35 every day.
Lunch prices are:
Regular lunch:$1.50
Extra Milk: .50
Reduced lunch: .25

Please put all money in an envelope labeled with your child’s first AND last name, and specify whether the money is to be used for lunches or milk.

Snack Time
Every afternoon we will have snack. The cafeteria provides juice every day and provides a healthy snack on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Kindergarten parents send in a healthy snack on a rotating schedule. We will schedule a snack on or near your child’s birthday so a special treat can be sent in on that day. The Kindergarten Snack Reminder will be sent home to remind you of your snack day. Remember, send only a healthy snack, not a drink. Thanks for helping out!

Please do not allow your child to bring toys from home to school. We want to avoid the risk of personal items being misplaced or broken. We have plenty of toys here at school for all the children to play with.

Thank you for familiarizing yourself with our classroom schedules and routines. Educating a child is a team effort between school and home. We appreciate your support, and are happy to answer any questions that you may have regarding your child’s kindergarten experience.
